Activism

Punk music and its culture were born out of a desire to push back against the status quo, both in terms of music and society at large.

The punk movement was about more than just music; it became a lifestyle and a form of activism. Many punk bands expressed dissatisfaction with political corruption, social inequalities, and the rigid norms of mainstream culture. The movement encouraged individuality, self-expression, and often embraced controversial or unconventional ideas, from anarchism to environmentalism.

Punk - The Art of Rebellion

This exhibition is about the individual punk, independent stories not those in the limelight of punk like Johnny Rotten and Vivienne Westwood but the experiences of those teenagers who lived it daily. Our history is too often told from a “bourgeois” perspective, mainline culture. It’s about time it is told by those in it.

An exhibition for the people by the people

MY STORY – Rebel with clause

Recession had caused the left and right to grow. The National Front was trying to march and peddle racist lies, 1977 was the year of the Queens Jubilee. And The Sex Pistols burst onto the scene with their famous interview and swearing. Every kid that had grown up with poverty, poor housing, three-day week must have felt something. I was delighted that there was a platform for what I thought. I loved the jumble sale clothes because it was normal for me. I didn’t support the monarchy, the fact that you could be called “Queen Elizabeth” or “Elizabeth Queen” meant that being born into privilege could make such a difference to a person’s life. The Sex Pistols gave voice to those that did not have one. I remember watching the Sex Pistols going down the Thames, having a party, opposing the Monarchy. “God Save the Queen, a Fascist regime, made you a moron, potential H Bomb, God Saves”.

Exhibition has a look at issues around:
